DAY 2:

A full day tour with a private guide to explore Hanoi, including the Ngoc Son Temple in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake, a walking tour of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, the Temple of Literature built in 1076. The day ends with a glass of beer in a local bar.

DAY 3:

Transfer to the Gulf of Tonkin to board a wooden sail boat for a journey through Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of around 1,600 islands and uninhabited islets. Overnight in a cabin on board.

DAY 4:

Morning at leisure as you sail through Ha Long Bay, before the journey back to Hanoi. After lunch on board, return to Hanoi, where you will be transferred to your hotel. Rest of the day at leisure to further explore the city at your own pace.

DAY 5:

Departure transfer to the airport in Hanoi in time for your flight to Hue, where you will be met on arrival and driven to your hotel. Hué was the political, cultural and religious capital of a united Vietnam under the Nguyen dynasty from 1802 until 1945. The Perfume River winds its way through the city, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Within the Hue Citadel were located not only administrative and military functions of the Empire, but also the Imperial Residence, the Hoang Thanh (Imperial City), the Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Purple City) and related royal palaces.

DAY 6:

Full-day tour of Hué including the Forbidden Purple City which was constructed under the Emperor Gia Long in the early 19th century, and is located within the Citadel of Hue, which was badly damaged during the Tet offensive of 1968.  After lunch board a dragon boat for a trip on the Perfume River to visit the Thien Mu Pagoda. Afterwards visit the tombs of the emperors Tu Duc and Khai Dinh .The tomb of Khai Dinh represents a fusion of traditional Vietnamese style and modern European influences. If there is time we hope to include a visit to Dong Ba market (open until 8:00pm).

DAY 7:

Excursion to Vi Da, famous for its gardens and the village of An Hoa to visit the Chat Vi pagoda and Cu Lai market. In the afternoon we suggest an excursion to the Thanh Toan Bridge, an arched, wooden bridge over the canal with a tiled roof, first constructed over 200 years ago. There is a small museum nearby displaying agricultural instruments and traditional farming methods in the paddy fields.

DAY 8:

Departure transfer from Hue to Da Nang, travelling on the spectacular coastal road known as the Hai Van Pass. On arrival in Da Nang, enjoy a visit to the fascinating Museum of Cham Sculpture (above) which opened in 1915. Onwards travel via the villages of the Marble Mountains to reach Hoi An, where on arrival you will be taken to your hotel. The rest of the day at leisure.

DAY 9:

Enjoy a walking tour (the best way to explore this ancient city) of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tour takes in the lovely 18th century Japanese Covered Bridge, the Pottery Museum, Chua Ong Pagoda and the vibrant local market. We also include a visit to Tan Ky House, a beautifully preserved home constructed over 200 years ago.

DAY 10:

Today’s activities include an interesting encounter with a local specialist in traditional medicine. After this, you will have the opportunity to meet and chat with a former tiger tamer, who will explain how he used to catch tigers using a net. The excursion includes a stop off for delicious lunch in a local village followed by a relaxing walk through paddy fields.

DAY 11:

Transfer from your hotel in Hoi An to Da Nang airport in time to check in for the flight to Ho Chi Minh city, where on arrival you will be met and driven to your hotel. Once referred to as the “Diamond of the Far-East”, Ho Chi Minh is today Vietnam’s largest city, an amalgam of modern skyscrapers with oriental pagodas, where office workers in business suits mingle side by side with those wearing traditional palm-leaf conical hats.

DAY 12:

City tour of Ho Chi Minh, including Reunification Palace, the Notre Dame Cathedral and the impressive Saigon Central Post Office. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant, before heading towards the War Remnants Museum, a sobering reminder of the Vietnam War (which they call the American War) which lasted from 1954 until 1975. When the tour finishes, your driver and guide will take you back to your hotel.

DAY 13:

Travel from Ho Chi Minh to Can Tho, with a stop en route at Ben Tre where you will cruise along the river which is a tributary of the Mekong. Visit local workshops including a brick kiln and a weaving house, where straw mats are woven by hand. On arrival in Can Tho you will be driven to your hotel.

DAY 14:

Day trip out to the Cai Rang Floating Market (above), the most famous floating market of the Mekong Delta. The excursion will continue, passing along small canals to visit a rice husking mill and a shop where rice noodles are produced.  At the end of the day return to Ho Chi Minh city and check in to your hotel.

DAY 15:

Day at leisure in Ho Chi Minh city to explore the city before your flight home the following day.

DAY 16:

Departure transfer to the airport in time to check in for your evening flight home or further afield.
