A guided tour in the morning to explore this World Heritage city, taking in small side streets, back alleys and hidden charms. The tour includes the important Wat Xieng Thong temple, the National Museum (the former Royal Palace). We recommend a climb up the 328 steps to Phousi Mountain for rewarding views of the city.
Lunch is included at a local house, followed by some time at leisure back at your hotel.
In the late afternoon, visit a small village about half an hour away, for a traditional Lao ceremony, based upon ancient beliefs, at the end of which the village elders wrap a white cotton thread around your wrist, while chanting an invocation to strengthen the power of the blessings. Afterwards enjoy a game of petanque with some local snacks and drinks with the villagers before returning to your hotel.
Optional start at dawn, to witness the sacred ritual of monks on their daily alms rounds followed by a visit to the lively Morning Market before returning to your hotel for breakfast.
Morning tour to Kuang Si Waterfall and the Living Crafts Centre, to learn about textiles and meet the weavers who help keep these traditions alive. At the falls, crystal water cascades into idyllic turquoise pools. After a picnic lunch return to Luang Prabang.
Rest of the day at leisure.
Morning excursion to the Pak Ou Caves, a pilgrimage site high above the Mekong River 27 miles outside Luang Prabang. On the way we may be able to stop at Ban Sang Khong, a wonderful silk weaving village and, if there is time, at Ban Sang Hai where they produce Lao Lao, a rice whisky.
At the caves there are more than 3,000 images of Buddha, some inlaid with semiprecious stones.
Return by boat along the Mekong to Luang Prabang.
Free afternoon and evening.
