Arrival transfer to Bukit Lawang
You will be picked up at the airport of Medan for a three-hour drive along palm oil- and rubber-plantations to reach your hotel in Bukit Lawang, on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park that is famous for its Orang Utans.
Bukit Lawang - Berastagi
A jungle trek through the rainforest in search of Orang Utans and monkeys. Your guide will talk about the flora and fauna of the forest, the different species and the medicinal properties of certain plants and trees.
In the afternoon travel to Berastagi. This little town was a favourite in colonial times and lies at an altitude of 1300 meters on the Karo-plains. It is a fertile area, overshadowed by two impressive volcanoes.
Berastagi - Lake Toba
This morning visit the Sipiso-piso waterfalls on the way to Lake Toba. The last stretch of the road offers beautiful views of the lake. At Prapat take the ferry to your hotel on the peninsula of Tuktuk, on Samosir Islands. It is a lovely spot.
The Batak people who live here are renowned throughout Indonesia for their singing skills and extravert, cheerful character.
Free day at Lake Toba
You might want to rent a bike and cycle to the villages of Tomok or Simanindo. The terrain is flat and the weather is relatively cool. It is also possible to hike in the rugged mountainous interior of Samosir Island to reach other traditional and hidden villages.
Lake Toba to Sipirok
A long day's journey through the Sumatran mountains of Bukit Barisan. The views vary from breathtaking panoramas to crowded markets, green rice-fields, and impressive tracts of rainforest. On the way we visit the colourful market in Balige.
Sipirok to Bukittinggi
A journey following a scenic, but very winding road. At Bonjol we have a short stop to cross the equator on foot!
Bukittinggi is located in a valley flanked by two volcanoes. Bukittinggi is the centre for the Minangkabau, a very proud people, with their own matrilineal traditions meaning that all property is passed down from mother to daughter.
Free day to explore Bukittinggi. We can arrange hikes through the canyon, above which the town is situated or excursions to the surrounding countryside that chararcterise the culture and architecture of the Minangkabau people.
At night we recommend a music and dance performance.
Travel from Sumatra to Java
You will be transferred to the airport of Padang for the flight to Yogyakarta in Java.
You will be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel.
Rest of the day at leisure.
A city tour through Yogyakarta by becak (trishaw). This is the best way to deal with the maze of streets of the bustling old town. Visit the famous kraton of the sultan of Yogyakarta, a wayang kulit- or batik-workshop and learn all about these art forms from Yogya famous all over the country.
In the afternoon we take a walk through Kota Gede, the oldest part of Yogyakarta and visit the Prambanan temple, a wonderful place to watch the sunset, while being surrounded by the reliefs depicting the story of the Ramayana. In the evening we recommend a performance of the Ramayana ballet in Yogyakarta.
Excursion to Borobudur
A visit to central Java would not be complete without seeing the impressive Borobudur, the largest Buddhist complex in the world. Take your time to walk along the different levels to see the detailed reliefs depicting the life of Buddha and his teachings.
There is time for a cycle ride in the countryside or a visit to a local market to learn all about tofu, kopi luwak (civet coffee) and gula Jawa (palm sugar). In the afternoon return to Yogyakarta.
Train to Malang
Travelling by train is a lovely way to view the countryside with its rice fields. In the late afternoon you will arrive in Malang, a city rich in colonial history and with a cooler climate. After checking in to your hotel there is a bit of time to explore the city at your leisure.
Travel to Bromo Volcano
Departure transfer from Malang through beautiful scenery to reach Mount Bromo. There is a stop at a waterfall en route. Dramatic views of Java's most famous volcano, which has been erupting sporadically in recent years.
Bromo - Kalibaru
We recommend an early start to view the sunrise at the crater rim of Mount Bromo, with its eery lunar landscape. You can get there on foot, by horse or by jeep. After breakfast back at the hotel you will be driven to the small hill town of Kalibaru, surrounded by fertile plantations and farms. Overnight accommodation on a plantation.
Free day to relax at the pool or to go for a walk in the plantation. Learn all about the plants and spices that grow here, such as cloves, peppers, cinnamon and pineapples. If you feel like stetching your legs, you might like to hike to a nearby waterfall (approximately two miles away).
Ferry to Bali and transfer to Ubud
Departure transfer to Katapang harbour to catch the ferry for the short crossing to reach Bali where you will continue on to Ubud. En route we stop at the famous Hindu temple of Tanah Lot, beautiful landmark, located on a dramatic offshore rock which makes for an ideal introduction to this 'island of the Gods'.
Ubud is regarded as the artistic heart of Bali and the centre of cultural events. It has a lovely setting in the rice paddies and steep ravines of the central foothills and the surrounding villages such as Campuhan, Penestanan, Peliatan and Batuan are reknowned for the quality of their handicrafts and woodcarvings.
We recommend a visit to the Monkey Forest and to the fascinating temple of Pura Dalem Agung, known as the temple of death!
At the beach: Seminyak or Samur according to preference.
Seminyak is Bali's most fashionable beach, home to the island's luxurious resorts with a number of fine restaurants, designer boutiques and chic, cosmopolitan nightspots.
Sanur offers just about everything that you want for a few days R & R: miles of golden sand, a range of locally owned restaurants and bars, a relaxed, friendly place with a beach market selling sarongs, jewellery, woodcarvings and handicrafts.
Departure transfer to Denpasar airport in time to check in for your transatlantic flight home.
